Commission News: February 2022
Dear friends,
Welcome back to another year. I hope you were able to have a restful break over the summer and a positive start to 2022 despite the continued stresses of the pandemic. My Commissioner colleagues and staff at the Commission are ready and focused to continue our important work this year.
We have already had quite a busy January. Commissioner Hollonds has advocated strongly for the needs of children in their return to school, and Commissioner Gauntlett welcomed the renewed focus on the rights of people with disability after Dylan Alcott was appointed 2022 Australian of the Year. Commissioner Finlay also wrote an op-ed advocating against the use of hotels as places of detention, highlighted by the Djokovic issue. You can read more about this work below.
As we settle into the new year, we are no doubt aware of the challenges ahead of us – entering year three of the pandemic amid growing pressures and discussions about human rights in this country and across the world. Our major project Free and Equal is dedicated to this cause, making the case to modernise human rights law in Australia.
This year, I’m looking forward to continuing the crucial role of the Commission alongside our stakeholders and the community and will as always endeavour to keep you updated on this work.
With my very best wishes,
RosalindEmeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM
President
Take our children’s wellbeing survey
Are you the parent, grandparent or carer of a child aged 9 to 17? We want to hear from you!
National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds is inviting children and their families to participate in a survey about how living through the past two years of COVID-19 has affected children’s mental health and wellbeing.
Your insights and experiences will help inform the support services that children and young people need as we continue to deal with the impacts of COVID-19 and as we emerge from it.
There’s one survey for children and another for parents, which both take around 10 minutes to complete and are strictly confidential.
Addressing modern slavery risks in the resources and energy sectors
The Commission has released a new guide to help the resources and energy sectors respond effectively to modern slavery risks.
Resources, energy, and modern slavery: Practical responses to managing risks to people was prepared as part of a joint collaboration between the Australian Human Rights Commission and KPMG Australia.
The guide highlights particular modern slavery risks prevalent in the resources and energy sectors, provides tips on leading practice and a rights-based approach to this risk and fostering transparent modern slavery reporting.
Protecting human rights ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023
Alongside the New Zealand Human Rights Commission and FIFA, the Commission has published a Human Rights Risk Assessment for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be held in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand in 2023.
The assessment examined the potential human rights impact of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 on players, spectators, workers and local communities in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. It considered the safety and well-being of players, workers, and spectators, to ensure an inclusive event in which everyone can participate.
As part of the assessment, a number of recommendations across key areas were developed, including athlete rights, worker and labour rights, accessibility, social inclusion, gender equality, anti-discrimination, and safeguarding and child protection.
