FIRST NATIONS PROGRAMMING MANAGER

QMusic has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Indigenous music industry practitioner to join our team as First Nations Programming Manager.
We’re looking for someone who can take the lead in engaging, supporting, promoting and helping develop Indigenous talent to ensure our First Nations artists and industry have the opportunity to control their own careers and be showcased to the rest of the country and the world. The First Nations Programming Manager works as part of the QMusic Programming team delivering projects, services and training programs that develop the professional careers of Queensland contemporary musicians and First-Nations-led music businesses and practitioners.
With experience in the Queensland and Australian music industry as well as connection to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Community, you will also ideally have experience in working in Professional Development, Event Programming and Grant Assessment. Priority for the position will be given to Indigenous Australians under the Special Measure Provision, Section 12(1) of the Equal Opportunity Act.

QMusic is the peak body for Queensland’s music sector, a not-for-profit dedicated to securing the future of an industry that delivers artistic, cultural, social and economic value to Queensland.
We provide powerful platform events to showcase Australian talent to audiences here and around the globe, all the while acting as a key advocate for the sector and investing in the grassroots of music across our state.
Key events include BIGSOUND, the largest music industry event in the Southern Hemisphere, the QUEENSLAND MUSIC AWARDS, our state-wide skills and capacity building program QMUSIC CONNECT – as well as festivals like VALLEY FIESTA, and fellowships such as the Billy Thorpe Scholarship and the Grant McLennan Fellowship.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Consult with artists and communities on First Nations music industry gaps and needs, and help find ways for artists to explore, produce and share their music through consulting with. In partnership with First Nations board members and cultural consultants, advise and provide feedback on cultural sensitivity in marketing collateral and external communications.
· Working on QMusic Programs, including as a member of the BIGSOUND Festival Programming team and overseeing BIGSOUNDS First Nations activity
· Helping to facilitate workshops and other cultural and industry learning programs so that needs are met, and gaps are filled.
· Identifying opportunities and developing strategic partnerships
SELECTION CRITERIA
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
- Over 3 years working in the contemporary music sector, with a key focus on major events, concerts and/or workshops.
- A demonstrated strong connection with your local and wider Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community, and expertise and knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians, artists and industry within Queensland.
- Demonstrated project management skills including budgeting, timelines, team leadership and contracting.
Desirable criteria
- Strong national and international music industry networks, with 5+ years’ experience.
- Experience conceiving and delivering major events.
- Experience working in multi-arts festival contexts.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Flexibility required for days to fluctuate around key project delivery, for example 3 days per week during off-peak times, up to 5 days per week around peak event delivery.
