JUNE 2022

AACHWA NEWS

AMaGA Conference 2022

“Hear. Us. Now: Turning conversations into actions.”

From 14 – 17 June, members of the AACHWA team attended the AMaGA (Australian Museums and Galleries Association) Conference.

The conference was a busy 4-day program with more than 400 delegates from all over Australia in attendance.  Jam packed with more than 100 speakers sharing stories from their museums, galleries and communities, the event provided a platform for important conversations about global issues that are impacting the Arts in Australia and connected WA and Australia to the Indian Rim communities. The program also included a dedicated Regional, Remote & Community Day to showcase successful arts projects and to discuss challenges experienced by some of Australia’s regional and remote communities when developing and implementing arts projects.

A highlight of the conference for AACHWA was being an exhibition stallholder where we spent many hours talking to delegates about the work that AACHWA does and shared information about all of our art centre members with a broad nation-wide Arts sector audience.
We would like to thank Juluwarlu Art Group and Martumili Artists for their support in this event.

ATSI PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT – STAGE TWO UPDATE

Art Centre visits: Warakurna Artists and Tjarlirli Art

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Product Development Project (PDP), is a first of its kind pilot to reset the fake art and souvenir market that exploits and appropriates Aboriginal art, culture, community, design and identity. Since July 2020, it has researched how to effectively disrupt harmful existing consumer markets where unethically acquired Aboriginal art and design is sold as merchandise in an Australian tourist industry worth billions of dollars a year.

A multi-stage project, Stage Two has focused on cultural protocols and product identification. This has involved a series of in-person consultations with the six participating art centres. In 2021, these consultations occurred at Spinifex Hill Studio, Martumili Artists, Nagula Jarndu Designs, and Waringarri Arts. The final two art centre visits took place in May of this year with Project Consultants Tim Acker, Delwyn Everard and Emilia Galatis, along with AACHWA PDP Project Coordinator, Simone Johnston, travelling to Warakurna Artists and Tjarlirli Art.

With the Stage Two artists consultations wrapped up, all the insights and learnings are being developed into an overarching set of bespoke cultural values, development principles, best practice licensing, and product pathways which are due to be completed by the end of June.

Consultants are also starting to undertake work for Stages Three and Four of the Project. These next stages are happening concurrently between May 2022 – June 2023 and will focus on key messaging and education, supply chain analysis and combinations, licensing / contract models, and product development.

MEMBERS CATCHUP RECAP

MAY

The May Members catch-up featured a presentation from Donna Robinson (NSW) and Rob Bitmead (WA), both from ArtsLaw Artists in the Black program, who provided a very informative session on artist wills and the considerations for art centres in executing deceased estates.
Key topics that were discussed by Donna & Rob included:

  • What is a will?  Why have one?
  • What happens when an artist passes away?
  • What does the art centre do after an artist passes away?
  • What happens if there is no will?

If you would like to know more about this discussion please contact Glenda Dixon programs@aachwa.com.au or for inquiries specific to the Artists in the Black program, please visit the ArtsLaw website.
